       Happy Mother's Day weekend!  Mamapalooza!  It's tomorrow in Goodale Park...  Celebrate on Sunday - naturally... give her the day off to live simply, prepare dinner with organic food from the co-op, buy her a book and give her time to read it... or take her and the whole family to the Simply Living annual conference - special programs are available for children and there's a youth strand this year!  See below -

        A week from today, next Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m., Jim Merkel, sustainability activist and author of Radical Simplicity: Small Footprints on a Finite Earth, will deliver the keynote presentation to begin the annual Simply Living conference, co-sponsored by the OSU Social Responsibility Initiative with support from the Green Building Forum.  Please register soon!  See the calendar or visit http://sri.osu.edu/sustainabilitynow/ for full program, locations on the OSU campus, and registration details about Sustainability Now!         Saturday program includes morning plenary: "Sustainability as a Social Justice Issue", followed by 20+ workshops.  Connect with fellow citizens who are creating sustainability through creative, powerful and effective actions. Help Envision a Health Cooperative in Clintonville at the Simply Living offices on Thursday May 29 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.
        What would a anne in Clintonville look like?  This is a joint project by Simply Living Healthy, the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center and Our Optimal Health, with assistance from Columbus Public Health.  The working group is exploring the concept of a member-owned, holistically-integrated, wellness and health support organization in Clintonville.  Join us to help envision the future of health and new health care possibilities in our community.   Location: Simply Living Office at 2929 North High Street.  For more information contact Debbie Crawford at crawford@columbus.rr.com or Kris Keller at k_keller@wowway.com.

Mozart's Café to Host Benefit Party for the Community Resources Center (CRC) Monday, May 19 from 6 - 8:30 p.m.
       Have you attended a community meeting or participated in a drum circle at the Community Resources Center, 14 W. Lakeview Ave?  The annual CRC fundraiser at Mozart's Bakery and European Piano Cafe, 2885 N. High St., is a great opportunity to support this invaluable asset in our community, PLUS enjoy a delicious dinner, the Paul Love Jazz Trio, and meet and network with other CRC supporters.  Do consider an RSVP and if you can't attend, please send them a check for whatever amount you can afford.  Prices are $45 for an individual and $80 for a couple.  Households able to help sponsor the event for a $250 contribution are welcome!  "The Mozart's event is our single largest annual fundraiser," said Bill Owens, CRC's Executive Director (and Co-op Board member).  "Each year we are grateful to the Sahas for putting on this wonderful event for us," Bill added.  Money raised will go to essential programs--providing assistance to families in need, helping seniors to remain safe and active residents in our community, and providing children a nurturing place to go after school and during the summer.  Space is limited and an RSVP is required.  Interested attendees can call CRC at 268-3539 between 9-5 M-F to receive an invitation and/or make a reservation. A Celebration of the Buddha: First Annual Multi-Cultural Visakha Gathering at Whetstone Park Sat. May 17 from 10:30 - 4 p.m.
        Come to learn about Buddhist teachings and culture, practice with like-minded people,or just enjoy a friendly celebration in the park. All are welcome - for part or all of the day. 10:30 - 12 noon: opening followed by sitting meditation interspersed with walking (informal meditation instruction provided). 12:00 - 12:30 sutra service and walk; 12:30 -  4 pm vegetarian potluck meal, fellowship & family activities; 4 pm closing. Choral Festival Concert Features Missa Luba to Benefit Doctors Without Borders Friday, June 6 from 7 - 8:15 p.m.
        Wow! Some of central Ohio's finest community choirs are gathering to present an awesome choral event... The Columbus Children's Choir, the Columbus Women's Chorus, Capriccio!, First Church Choir, and the Magpie Consort, will sing individual selections of sacred and secular music, and members of all these choirs, together with other singers from throughout central Ohio, will then join together in Missa Luba, an exuberant African-style mass that will conclude the concert. Missa Luba is a Congolese style Mass in five movements, scored for voices, drums, and tenor solo, and uses African style call and response, and other traditional song forms. Free admission.  A collection will raise funds to support Doctors Without Borders, an international organization supplying medical relief in areas of conflict worldwide, including Darfur and the Democratic Republic of Congo. OEFFA Organic Lawn Care Workshop in Columbus Saturday  June 14 from 9 am - 12 noon
        Organic lawn care is a great option for those who want a vibrant lawn that they can be proud of, without using chemical applications that can be detrimental to the health of pets, people, and local wildlife. This do-it-yourself style organic lawn care class will present information on how to safely manage soil health, fertilization, disease, weeds, and pests that can cause problems in the yard. Different types of grass, good lawn care practices, and the use of native plantings as grass alternatives will be discussed. There will be plenty of time for individual questions. This workshop will be taught by Nate Elfner of Elfner Landscape and Organic Lawn Care. Cost is $25 OEFFA members/$35 non-members. Class size is limited, so sign up early!         The Community on East Maynard is a group of five Simply Living households plus other like-minded neighbors who are interested in: Simple lifestyles, Urban living that is also family friendly, Artistic, musical and creative endeavors and Ecological and sustainable values. Our block (located between OSU and the CCM) is an eclectic community of students to retirees, individuals, young couples and families.  We are known in the greater neighborhood as an “exceptional” block of dedicated neighbors and community activists.  We're frequently in the yard or on the sidewalk visiting, working on projects, eating together and playing together.

        Location, location!  This is a walkable neighborhood close to many ethnic restaurants, a coffee shop, live music, and video store... it's less than a mile from the SL office, the CCM and Crestview School (future home of Indianola Informal Alternative School)... we're near the Gateway, Studio 35 and Wexner Center, close to four bus lines and 1/2 mile from the Olentangy bike path/ OSU Wetlands and Tuttle pool and recreation center.

Call for Volunteers to Support the Co-op at our Community Market
       The Co-p Board of Directors is developing a Strategic Business Plan for the Community Market that calls for increased outreach to the central Ohio community.  For example, the Co-op will be represented at the Clintonville Farmer's Market every Saturday beginning May 24th... volunteers are needed to help pass out literature and promote the co-op as the place to find local produce from our local farmers 7 days a week!  And the Co-op is sponsoring the 5K Race at Whetstone on Memorial Day to benefit the Community Resources Center... we'll have a table there and volunteers will be needed to promote awareness of the Market.  Want to get involved?  Contact Alan Woods <alan0198@yahoo.com>

        Join OSU Extension Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists as they identify common and spring migratory birds by sight and sound in varied habitats. All programs begin with a short presentation on birding "etiquette" and invaluable information regarding field marks of birds. Meet at the Visitors Center Deck. Cost is $5, reservation required. A summer hike over the same course will demonstrate the woodland's response to shading and the prairie in peak bloom.         This lecture-style workshop will present tactics artists have used to critique and challenge societal forces such as excess commercialization, censorship, privatization or public spaces, bias, and authoritarian control. Mon. May 26  Memorial Day 5k Race at Whetstone Park to Benefit Community Resources Center  12 noon - 6 p.m.
        Bill Owens, Executive Director of the CRC (and Co-op Board member), expects about 300-500 runners to sign up for the 5k race.  "This will be a race for everyone," Owens said, "and with the race taking a scenic route through Whetstone Park, it should be enjoyable for anyone looking to support the CRC. "I think we'll have a combination of those people who do this on a regular basis and those Clintonville residents who just want to take a pleasant walk on Memorial Day and support the CRC," Owens said. progress has been made in signing up local business sponsors, but more are needed. Thurs. May 29  Become a Stream Quality Monitoring Volunteer at Highbanks  6:30 - 9 p.m.
        Training is from 6:30 to 9 pm at the Streamside Education Center of Highbanks Metro Park. Volunteers monitor insects and other small creatures in the waters of the Olentangy to get a picture of the stream's health over time and to alert us to potential problems. No previous experience is necessary. A perfect opportunity for families with children who want to learn more about our river.         Deepen your practice of Nonviolent Communication using the NVC Dance Floors. The NVC Dance Floors are spatial maps made up of large cards that place NVC processes on the floor in various layouts called "Dances". Each card represents a step in a dance of communication. People learning NVC walk through the steps, often with coaching from a trainer, or support from others in the group.         Norman Shealy, MD, the founding president of the American Holistic Medical Association, has predicted that "energy medicine is the future of medicine."  Thhis workshop is based on the premise that emotional and physical illnesses result from isturbances in the body's energies.  Innovative methods have been developed to assess and balance the disruptions in these energies. This workshop will describe the energy systems and a balancing of the energies will be demonstrated.  The experience will be both didactic and experiential. You will experience a daily energy routine for balancing; learn how to apply methods relevant to physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral concerns and within an ethical and professional framework. Fri. June 6  Choral Festival Concert Features Missa Luba to Benefit Doctors Without Borders  7 - 8:15 p.m.
        Wow! Some of central Ohio's finest community choirs are gathering to present an awesome choral event... The Columbus Children's Choir, the Columbus Women's Chorus, Capriccio!, First Church Choir, and the Magpie Consort, will sing individual selections of sacred and secular music, and members of all these choirs, together with other singers from throughout central Ohio, will then join together in Missa Luba, an exuberant African-style mass that will conclude the concert. Missa Luba is a Congolese style Mass in five movements, scored for voices, drums, and tenor solo, and uses African style call and response, and other traditional song forms. Free admission.  A collection will raise funds to support Doctors Without Borders, an international organization supplying medical relief in areas of conflict worldwide, including Darfur and the Democratic Republic of Congo.         The privately owned Schnormeier Gardens near Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio are hosting an open house on June 14 and 15.         Organic lawn care is a great option for those who want a vibrant lawn that they can be proud of, without using chemical applications that can be detrimental to the health of pets, people, and local wildlife. This do-it-yourself style organic lawn care class will present information on how to safely manage soil health, fertilization, disease, weeds, and pests that can cause problems in the yard. Different types of grass, good lawn care practices, and the use of native plantings as grass alternatives will be discussed. There will be plenty of time for individual questions.
