Friday, April 25, 2008

Hello Everyone,

Don't Delay - Register Today!  We're talking about the one, don't-miss conference event of the year, and 2008 will be the best ever!  Friday evening May 16 at 7 p.m. spend the evening with Jim Merkel on Radical Sustainability, author of Radical Simplicity: Small Footprints on a Finite Earth.  This keynote speech will take place in OSU's new 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Dr., which is OSU's first building  to meet the national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) specifications. Then come all day Saturday, May 17 to OSU's Agricultural Administration Building, 2120 Fyffe Road, and choose from 21 interactive workshops on personal and community sustainability, beginning with a continental breakfast and morning plenary on "Sustainability as a Social Justice Issue," featuring Columbus leaders Catherine Girves, Willis Brown and Kwodwo Abadio, with welcoming remarks by author Michael Dowd.
Ok, by now you have guessed this exciting conference is Sustainability Now!  Strategies for Personal and Community Action, co-sponsored by Simply Livng and OSU's Social Responsibility Initiative.  This is the time and place to learn how to live more sustainably and be inspired by others who are doing it! Downshifting your work….Supporting more local foods….Creating more sustainable neighborhoods….Leaving a smaller environmental footprint…and registration is now available online!  Get the latest updates too when you check in at http://sri.osu.edu/sustainabilitynow/.  Lunch provided by Black Creek Bistro, a restaurant committed to fresh, local and sustainable foods. How can a conference this good by so inexpensive?  Don't wait to apply for this unique opportunity - a limited number of seats are available.
But wait - there's more! Youth activities abound - hey, we're doing this for our children and grandchildren... there will be a full day of activities for young children ages 3 and up and for upper elementary and middle school youth.  And this year, a first-ever program for Central Ohio teens-- a Youth Summit on the Environment designed for young people who want to effect change in their community. If you are in high school and are interested in meeting others passionate about this topic, developing your leadership talents and learning more about how to affect sustainable change, this free workshop is for you! To apply, visit: http://sri.osu.edu/sustainabilitynow/youthsummit.html

Organic gardening ideas are plentiful in this spring  issue and the big Tent is out front at the Market with many seedlings waiting for your garden.

The Co-p Board of Directors is developing a Strategic Business Plan for the Community Market that calls for increased outreach to the central Ohio community.  For example, the Co-op will be represented at the Clintonville Farmer's Market every Saturday beginning May 24th... volunteers are needed to help pass out literature and promote the co-op as the place to find local produce from our local farmers 7 days a week!  And the Co-op is sponsoring the 5K Race at Whetstone on Memorial Day to benefit the Community Resources Center... we'll have a table there and volunteers will be needed to promote awareness of the Market.  Want to get involved?  Contact Alan Woods <alan0198@yahoo.com>

Fri. Apr. 25  Vernal Pool Monitoring at Stratford Ecological Center  9:30 p.m.
A vernal pool is a temporary body of water.  It is an important part of the ecosystem, supplying breeding and feeding grounds for creatures that could not survive in open water.  Stratford is part of a statewide vernal pool monitoring program.  Join us one hour after sunset during April, May and June.  Each month we’ll listen to a recording of frog calls before venturing out to the swamp.  Flashlights in hand, we’ll hike to the edge of the swamp.  Then, lightless, we’ll listen quietly for mating calls.  Some months the sound is intense; other months we hear only distant calls.  Then the salamander hunt begins!  What an exciting adventure, searching the dark swamp, for any signs of movement!  Bring the whole family on this late night adventure!  Wear mud boots and bring a strong flashlight for each person attending.  Free. This event is by reservation only. Contact Christa at 740-363-2548 or treebeing@aol.com  or visit www.StratfordEcologicalCenter.org. Location: 3083 Liberty Rd., outside Delaware, OH.

Notable and Quotable

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." ~ Steve Jobs
