Community Update
>>>Natural Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<

Friday, April 4, 2008

Hello Everyone,

As our community grows, so does our Community Calendar!  You will find ~40 events this week to choose how you will learn, play, grow, and share your talents and insights with others.  The list now includes ~600 people and it too grows when you refer and forward information to your friends. You can also access the Community Update at the Co-op's website - here's the link:
http://www.communitymarket.org/view/community_update.  When you participate in our community, you not only learn about the local resources - people, businesses, nonprofit organizations, etc. - but you also contribute to our community and  the creation of a vibrant local economy.  And don't forget to join the Co-op and Simply Living!  Counting families we are now around 2500 members.  Thanks for your support - together we are making a difference in the quality of life in central Ohio.

Sponsors Needed for Whetstone Race on Memorial Day to Benefit Clintonville Resources Center (CRC)

Bill Owens, Executive Director of the CRC (and Co-op Board member), expects about 300-500 runners to sign up for the 5k race.  "This will be a race for everyone," Owens said, "and with the race taking a scenic route through Whetstone Park, it should be enjoyable for anyone looking to support the CRC. "I think we'll have a combination of those people who do this on a regular basis and those Clintonville residents who just want to take a pleasant walk on Memorial Day and support the CRC," Owens said. progress has been made in signing up local business sponsors, but more are needed. Businesses interested in sponsoring the race may call Owens at the CRC at (614) 268-3539. More information about the race and race sponsorship can be found on the CRC's Web site, http://ww.clintonvillecrc.org.

No April Fools!  The Community Market Announces New Grocery Bag Policy Effective April 1st

In an effort to encourage the use of cloth or re-usable bags, the Co-op is now charging a dime for either paper or plastic bags.  The good news is that for .99 cents shoppers can purchase a re-usable "earth bag" right at the checkout counter.  Of course, if you're already in the habit of bringing your own grocery bags, good for you, and good for the environment!

Website of the Week: The Wellness Forum and Wellness Forum Foods:  http://www.wellnessforum.com and http://www.wellnessforumfoods.com
Two related websites this week!  We talked about the many Wellness Forum events on our Calendar this month, but you can go online and access much more info, including a multimedia gallery of podcasts and video streaming presentations, info on personal as well as organizational wellness, a newsletter archive, and more.  Want to see Chef Del Sroufe in action?  Click on the WellnessForumFoods.com link and you will see and hear Del doing a demo on how to sautee veggies without oil. Very cool, and a great hook to entice you to become a member and experience more online classes.  All of Del's menus for ordering online to request home delivery are also easily accessible online.  I have to stop - this is making me hungry!

Odds & Ends

Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington DC is happening Sat-Wed April 5-9. Last year more than 100 people from 19 states came to Washington, holding more than 100 meetings with Congressional offices and 20 face-to-face meetings with Members of Congress. These volunteers helped gain 16 new co-sponsors for the Clean Water Protection Act—which would sharply curtail mountaintop removal coal mining. With the coal industry set to spend more than $35 million this year to greenwash the public and Congress, your representatives need to hear from you that the time for action on mountaintop removal coal mining is now. .For more information visit http://www.ilovemountains.org/action/wiw2008.

Notable and Quotable

"Lost"
~ David Wagoner
Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes  beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must  treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be  known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place  around you.
If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.
No two  trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what  a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The  forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find  you.
