"Wessie Fest" Nature Festival Seeks Enviornmental Displays and Activities for June Event in Westerville
Can you or an environmentally related  group you are involved with contribute a demo or create an exhibit for this upcoming festival?  "Wessie" is a mysterious creature associated with the Otterbein Lake project (rhymes with Nessie, the creature of Loch Ness...) that will be revealed during the Festival (Maybe... :-).  Do check out their excellent website that describes the exciting changes in store for this heretofore secluded, 8-acre lake - http://www.otterbeinlake.org/.  The purpose is to educate and interest people about nature, and to offer outdoor family fun. It attracts lots of families and couples. There's no charge for participants who offer educational exhibits and activities along with their own recruitment materials!  See photos of last year's successful event on the website and download a flyer.  Wessie Fest will be held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.  The Alum Creek Bikeway runs alongside the lake and the potential benefits of the community energies invested in the lake project are captured in an artist's drawing on the website.  Contact Lindalee W. “Why Good People Do Bad Things” - Author James Hollis Tells Us Why at Lecture, Workshop April 4-5
For each of us there are energies, motives, and agendas which operate outside our conscious control and seem contrary to our professed values. These energies, which Jung collectively identified as the Shadow, might best be defined not as evil, but as something that makes us uncomfortable with ourselves. Yet, such energies represent an enormous invitation for greater consciousness, for living more ethically, and for greater wholeness through integration.
“Why Good People Do Bad Things: Revisiting the Shadow,” a talk by James Hollis, Ph.D., in conjunction with the C.G. Jung Association of Central Ohio, will be held on Friday, April 4 at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., from 7 to 9 p.m. This program will define and illustrate the many ways in which the Shadow operates in personal and social life.
A workshop “Shadow Dimensions of Relationships” is scheduled for Saturday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., offering an examination of the psychodynamics of relationships – personal, interpersonal, societal and religious. Why do so many relationships end in bitterness and disappointment? Perhaps the quality of our relationships can never be more evolved than our connection to ourselves, the one person we bring to the relationship.  Hollis is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst and the author of 12 books, including Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life and the most recent Why Good People Do Bad Things: Understanding Our Darker Selves. Friday’s lecture is $15 - $25, Saturday’s workshop $70 - $95. To receive a registration form, call 614-291-8050 or visit http://www.JungCentralOhio.org.

Happy Spring/Vernal Equinox / Turning of the Star Wheel / Full Moon and a very welcome end of winter, at least according to the calendar.  But as Mark Twain put it, long before global warming...

"In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather
inside of four and twenty hours."  ~ Mark Twain

It's Columbus... if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Let's hope the snow is behind us though and as the weather warms we can get our gardens started, the compost turned, and spend more time outside and less time around the TV.  See TV Turnoff Week April 21-27...  And hey, it's time to party again!

If you braved the ice and snow at the last Co-op fundraiser at the Crest Tavern, you'll want to plan on coming to another fundraiser at the Crest on Saturday, April 12 from 6 pm. to 1 a.m.  More great bands and dinner again from chef Alex Smith, but this time Simply Living and the Community Market are collaborating to raise funds for WCRS,  the low power FM Community Radio Station.  Admission is only $5 and kids get in free!  Dinner is $10 and $5 for children.  The Michael Maher band featuring the gifted voice of Helen Haggerty and fabulous jam band Local Color are on board. We are hoping to have a 50/50 RAFFLE, a silent auction, and even auction off some DINNER DATES with SL and Co-op members.  We'll be needing volunteers as well as help for Alex in the Co-op Kitchen, along with servers, door people, clean up & promotion, etc.  To volunteer, please call Frank at 487-1111 or email him at Frank.tennyson@gmail.com

Odds & Ends

Our own Stratford Ecological Center was selected from more than 700 kids’ gardening programs nationwide to receive a 2008 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association (NGA). "The NGA is proud to support this terrific kids’ garden”, says Michael Metallo, President. “This program was selected because of a demonstrated commitment to actively and creatively engaging youth in the gardening process and to improving the community. We were able to see from their application that the garden program will be sustained for years to come.”   Congratulations to our friends at Stratford who have created this and other outstanding programs - all regularly featured in our Calendar!

Fri. Apr. 25  Vernal Pool Monitoring at Stratford Ecological Center  9:30 p.m.
A vernal pool is a temporary body of water.  It is an important part of the ecosystem, supplying breeding and feeding grounds for creatures that could not survive in open water.  Stratford is part of a statewide vernal pool monitoring program.  Join us one hour after sunset during April, May and June.  Each month we’ll listen to a recording of frog calls before venturing out to the swamp.  Flashlights in hand, we’ll hike to the edge of the swamp.  Then, lightless, we’ll listen quietly for mating calls.  Some months the sound is intense; other months we hear only distant calls.  Then the salamander hunt begins!  What an exciting adventure, searching the dark swamp, for any signs of movement!  Bring the whole family on this late night adventure!  Wear mud boots and bring a strong flashlight for each person attending.  Free. This event is by reservation only. Contact Christa at 740-363-2548 or treebeing@aol.com  or visit www.StratfordEcologicalCenter.org. Location: 3083 Liberty Rd., outside Delaware, OH.
