A Ball of Snow
you make the fire
and I’ll show you something wonderful:
a big ball of snow!
~ Basho

There is much poetry today in this latest snowfall... especially through the eyes of our children and grandchildren.  Remember?  Give yourself a minute.

Do you love books?  The Simply Living bookstore committee is in need of some new members. We have a small collection but it's chock full of interesting reads, sprinkled with CDs, DVDs, and zInes as well.  We're doing an inventory very soon.  Would you be able to devote a couple of hours to help out with this task?  Perhaps we can entice you into a more regular routine of volunteering, but that's not a requirement!  Give a call to Chuck Lynd, the book buyer, if you can help out at 614-354-6172 or email chuck.lynd@gmail.com.  And oh yes, you will get first dibs on titles assigned to the bargain shelf and at least one book of your choice FREE!

Concerned about factory chicken? Public Comment Opportunity in Raymond, OH on Tues. Jan. 12  at  6:30 pm
Raymond is pretty far away (NW of Marysville) but it's very meaningful if Franklin Cty residents show their support for the anti-factory farming issue. Congresswoman Kilroy took a strong stand on it last year and will be submitting written remarks on this one. The expansion of factory farming in the Upper Scioto Watershed is an issue for everyone downstream. The Ohio Dept of Agriculture is holding a public comment meeting on the expansion of one of the existing facilities to just under half a million birds. This one is operated by NaturePure LLC. Residents are also very concerned about a proposed facility with more than 6 million hens, for which a draft permit has been issued (to be operated by Hi-Q). Come out to express views and/or learn about the issue. Should be an eye-opener on the meaning of "cage free" and "organic". Location: Raymond Elementary School gymnasium, 21511 Main St., in Raymond. This is also a great opportunity to talk with Pam Williams, winner of the OEC 2009 Environmental Watchdog Award. Pam is a rural mail carrier and a fantastic community organizer!

Website of the Week:  ProPublica: Journalism in the Public Interest  http://www.propublica.org/

With the blizzard of sound bites and "news" stories from corporate and government announcements amplified daily in the mainstream media, it is a challenge to locate objective, investigative reports from serious journalists. Not any more: the nonprofit ProPublica produces their own stories and aggregates dozens of reports from other news sources.  With $10 million annual funding from Bay Area billionaires Herbert and Marion Sandler, this new website is off and running - bookmark it and check it regularly.  Hot topics are clearly identified and easy to follow.  See for example the recent lead story on natural gas drilling and its affect on water supplies. Thanks to Margaret Lynd for recommending this site.

Sun. Jan. 10  Sitting with God Meditation Circle at Global Gallery in Clintonville  5 - 7 pm
Meet on Sundays to do "meditation yoga."  Yoga means "union with God".  And in our meditation yoga  we "unite" with God and "contemplate" this experience. It is quite blissful and satisfying. If meditation were not "blissful" we just wouldn't do it. Meditations are generally guided and last for 20 - 35 minutes and then we have wonderful discussions of what just happened! People have wild experiences just sitting on their rumps and it's a joy and learning experience to sometimes share them. It's easy to get a meditation buzz on in private, but we pick a public place to do our meditations because when you get your "meditation buzz on" you'll already be in public and you can more readily maintain it.  Led by Frank Tennyson <frank.tennyson@gmail.com> or call 487-1111.  Location: Global Gallery, 3535 N. High St. 43214.

Thurs. Feb. 11  Shakespeare Reading Group Meets Second Thursdays at Wild Goose Creative  7 - 9:30 p.m.
Did you really think Shakespeare's works survived for over 400 years merely because sadistic schoolmarms ever desired to inflict literary torture on unsuspecting children? Hogwash! Come join the Motleys to discover why them-as-knows say the Bard's words are truly immortal. Nervous? It's a non-judgmental environment where we're all acknowledged learners. We share what we know as we read through the plays, and we all stumble over the anachronisms and colloquialisms of Elizabethan speech. It's fun, it's funny, it's lively, and it's live! The Motleys read aloud, discuss and enjoy Shakespeare's plays in good company. We may supplement our readings with screenings of filmed productions, when available and time permitting. Who: Mature high school students on up.  Location: Wild Goose Creative, 2491
Summit Street, Columbus 43202 or Visit http://www.wildgoosecreative.com/Wild_Goose_Creative___Shakespeare_Group.html or contact Ben Gorman: shakespeare@wowway.com (NOTE: in March, we'll have to make other arrangements, as the space has been rented in advance, and Ben will be unavailable.)

"If you dam a river it stagnates. Running water is beautiful water. So be a channel." ~ English Proverb

Notable and quotable:

If dogs run free, then what must be,
Must be, and that is all.
True love can make a blade of grass
Stand up straight and tall.
In harmony with the cosmic sea,
True love needs no company,
It can cure the soul, it can make it whole,
If dogs run free.
~ Bob Dylan
