Community Update

>>>Natural Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<

Friday, December 11, 2009

Enjoy the holidays and count on a blue moon on New Year's eve.  Until then, there are holiday concerts (Magpie Consort events this weekend), the Free Press Holiday Salon Saturday evening, and Simply Living will host a holiday open house at the Global Gallery Coffee House in Clintonville on Sunday evening - I hope to see you there!  Don't forget the holiday trees from Raven Rocks are now available at the Community Market.  And if your mailbox is full of opportunities for holiday giving before the end of the year, remember that your membership in Simply Living is tax deductible and your membership in the co-op is an investment in our community (priceless! ok, 20 bucks) and WCRS, Local Matters, the CRC, and other local assets need your donations.  Buy local, give local, and love your neighbors!

Lots of news items this week... read on, and pass along to your friends whatever might be of interest enough to share.

Better WCRS Reception on 98.3 FM!
We reported this last week, but here is the official announcement from Marilyn Welker, Exec. Director of Simply Living...
If you haven't been able to listen to Simply Living's community radio station, WCRS, on air, try again! WCRS' translator station, 98.3 FM, recently raised its antenna height, and the signal is now significantly clearer and stronger in many areas of Franklin County. The antenna was raised 42' and repositioned, and some corroded connectors were replaced, all of which are contributing to much better reception for many listeners. Many thanks to the Columbus Institute of Contemporary Journalism, who owns the translator, and WCRS volunteers Eugene Beer, Evan Davis, Joe Atzberger, and Josh Tulecke-Paulson for their hours of hard work to make this possible!
Visit www.wcrsfm.org to view the current schedule and to listen via streaming and podcasts. Big changes are also in the works for our station at 102.1, as we plan to purchase and install a much better antenna soon.

*** And WCRS needs your support - please DONATE or consider underwriting one of our fine programs.  Call Jayme at 447-0296. ***

Simply Living Makin' Plans to Move Into New Digs - Search Committee Seeks Help from Local Realtor(s)
Simply Living is going to be looking for new office space over the coming months.  We are in the very early stages of the search process and we’re wondering if we have any realtor friends out there who might be interested in sitting on a “Search Committee” to help direct us as we look for new digs!  We’re not ready to start collecting locations, as we haven’t defined our parameters, so just know that right now we’re simply looking for a professional or two to add to our team.  (i.e. hold all those great ideas until we send out further requests … Thanks for thinking of us though!)

Make Our Voices Heard: Take the Shaping Our Future of Central Ohio Survey!
Shaping our Future is a plan the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) is spearheading for 12 counties in central Ohio. Expected to be completed in 2012, Shaping Our Future will integrate elements that impact the region including the transportation system, land use patterns, air quality, energy security, water quality, food production, and economic development.  The mission is to have a regionally accepted plan that ensures major public infrastructure expenditures and public development decisions are made with a focus on sustainability to secure a competitive advantage for central Ohio.   The survey takes 10 minutes. There are questions about energy, environment, transportation, the economy and your neighborhood. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity for you to say what you like about central Ohio and what you think would make it better. It’s anonymous, it’s fast, and it’s important. Get involved in Shaping Our Future!  Use this link: http://regionalplan.questionpro.com/ and please forward to your colleagues, friends and families.

Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter Address Inner Climate at Urban Arts Space Event Thurs. Dec. 17 from  5 - 7 pm
What's happening to the inner climate?  If you're like us, you've been keeping one eye on Copenhagen and wondering what its outcome might mean for the planet. Instead of waiting to hear the news, why not take action to help define the future?  In Copenhagen, Toke Moeller, Monica Nissen and other practitioners of the Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter will be holding a space alongside the official conference proceedings. They have issued a call to form "Inner Climate Learning Villages" across the world to further the ripple of awareness spreading out from COP15. What is a Learning Village? "A gathering, large or small, where people come together to engage in meaningful conversation around how our "inner climate" is affecting what we see happening in the outer world." Here is an opportunity to add your voice and wisdom to this crucial conversation at the Urban Arts Space around these questions: 1) What relation do you see between the inner climate and outer climate change? 2) What change in the inner climate would help us to imagine a sustainable future? 3)What story about sustainability are we learning to tell?  Location: Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St. in the Lazarus bldg downtown. Come beforehand for refreshments and to explore the current exhibits at the UAS; stay afterwards for the Marotta Hour, an evening of music hosted by Larry Marotta.  RSVP to Rick at livingston.28@gmail.com by Tuesday 12/15.

Website of the Week:  Breast Cancer Action  www.bcaction.org  and  www.thinkbeforeyoupink.org
Breast Cancer Action started in San Francisco and is now national education and activist organization that challenges assumptions and inspires change to end the breast cancer epidemic. BCA does not have local chapters, but they offer a newsletter and monthly e-alert.  The BCA and its "Think Before You Pink" project address the connection between industry and the false promotion of "cures" rather than looking at prevention. They use the term "Pinkwasher" to describe a company that purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink-ribboned product, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease. For instance, Eli Lilly makes breast cancer "prevention" and treatment drugs but also makes rBGH which is linked to breast cancer.  They recently launched a new campaign to eradicate rBGH from our food supply. Thanks to Pat Marida for recommending this site!

Thurs. Dec. 17  Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter Address Inner Climate at Urban Arts Space  5 - 7 pm

The Motleys read aloud, discuss and enjoy Shakespeare's plays in good company. We may supplement our readings with screenings of filmed productions, when available and time permitting. "Equal rights for the sexes will be achieved when mediocre women occupy high positions." ~ François Giroud

Notable and quotable:

If You Love, Love Openly

Twenty monks and one nun, who was named Eshun, were practicing meditation with a certain Zen master.

Eshun was very pretty even though her head was shaved and her dress plain. Several monks secretly fell in love with her. One of them wrote her a love letter, insisting upon a private meeting.

Eshun did not reply. The following day the master gave a lecture to the group, and when it was over, Eshun arose. Addressing the one who had written her, she said: "If you really love me so much, come and embrace me now."
