Community Update
>>>Natural Foods, Simple
Living, Good People, Building Community<<<
Friday, December 4, 2009
Hey, big news on
the local community radio front... WCRS 98.3 is
now being heard above the surrounding commercial din thanks to the
elevation of our antennae an extra 40 feet! (or was it 50?)
- but hear for yourself -
the reception is way better now so tune us in your car and at
home.
The antennae for WCRS on the 102.3 frequency has not been raised yet
but plans to do so are in the works. Yay! We're flexing
our LP muscles and beaming new music and talk/news shows in and
around Columbus. Yes, in the Neilsen race for listeners we
may be David pitted against the Goliath of mainstream media mergers
but history and evolution are on our side... The FCC recently
opened
up much more spectrum for local community radio, and together
with the
Internet LOCAL is gaining and picking up momentum. If you
haven't already, punch in your presets and start listening to Amy
Goodman, Free Speech Radio News, the So-Hud sound, World Music, Youth
Beat, Conscious Voices, and so much more. Check out the
schedule at http://wcrsfm.org/schedule You too will soon feel
the media changing right between your ears!
*** WCRS needs your support -
please DONATE or consider underwriting one of our fine programs.

Cool
Reads
at the Simply Living Bookstore!
Hot new titles at the
Bookstore: Whole Earth
Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto by Stewart Brand,
co-author of the Whole Earth Catalog. The book is making waves in
the
environmental community with his inclusion of nuclear power and
"ecosystem engineering" as useful strategies that need to be
explored.
The New Village Green: Living Light, Living Local, Living Large by
Stephen Morris gathers wisdom and insights from a compelling
array of thought leaders along side practical, downhome themes.
Topics
range from spirituality to solar panels and, just like a real village
green, are juxtaposed with opinions from "the new village people,"
including: Writers Bill McKibben and Michael Pollan; Scientists James
Lovelock and Donella Meadows; Spiritual leaders Gandhi and Buddha...
and sections that address good reasons to embrace alternative
currencies and even tips for growing great garlic!
Anticancer: A New Way of
Life (Hardcover) by
David Servan-Schreiber will be available soon. After undergoing
chemotherapy and surgery for brain cancer, Servan-Schreiber, a clinical
professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine, asked his oncologist if any lifestyle changes would prevent a
relapse; the answer was no. Certain this was wrong, Servan-Schreiber
spent months researching a mass of scientific data on natural defenses
against cancer. The result is this book that comes highly recommended
for anyone facing cancer or the risk of cancer - and that's about
everyone!
Posters!
As you
browse the books, notice a fresh array of beautiful poster art

events that support the transition to a resilient, sustainable
community in central Ohio.

Sat. Dec. 5 The
Five
Elements
of the Traditional Chinese Medicine 10 a.m - 1 p.m.
The Five Element System
originated from the human need to
comprehend how we fit into the natural world. The early practitioners
of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) strived to create a rational
system of healing. This system is still in use today after 3000
years
of practical experience. In the West, we don’t seem to connect the
importance of eating seasonally, exercise moderately and support our
bodies according to the element/season that we are in at the time. This
incongruency may create an imbalance in our bodies. Learning about the
five elements may create a much needed balance and a deeper
understanding of seasons, organ systems, emotions and herbs associated
with each element. The workshop includes two individual 3 hour
sessions, one on Nov. 7 and one on Dec. 5. The November class focused
on the understanding of Lung/Fall/Air-Metal element in
TCM(traditional Chinese medicine). The December class will focus on
Kidney/Winter/Water element in TCM. The emphasis will be on the
prevention, support and treatment as well. Classes will cover necessary
herb prep and understanding the emotional components of the elements.

Sun. Dec. 6 Sitting
with God Meditation Circle at Global Gallery in Clintonville
6 - 8 p.m.
Meet on Sundays to do "meditation
yoga." Yoga means "union
with God". And in our meditation yoga we "unite" with God
and
"contemplate" this experience. It is quite blissful and satisfying. If
meditation were not "blissful" we just wouldn't do it. Pretty much, we
have a party experiencing this bliss. Meditations are generally guided
and last for 20 - 35 minutes and then we have wonderful discussions of
what just happened! People have wild experiences just sitting on their
rumps and it's a joy and learning experience to sometimes share them.
It's easy to get a meditation buzz on in private, but we pick a public
place to do our meditations because when you get your "meditation buzz
on" you'll already be in public and you can more readily maintain
it.

Shakespeare
Reading Group Meets First Tuesdays at Wild Goose Creative 7 -

Shakespeare's works survived for over 400
years merely because sadistic schoolmarms ever desired to inflict
literary torture on unsuspecting children? Hogwash! Come join the
Motleys to discover why them-as-knows say the Bard's words are truly
immortal. Nervous? It's a non-judgmental environment where we're all
acknowledged learners. We share what we know as we read through the
plays, and we all stumble over the anachronisms and colloquialisms of
Elizabethan speech. It's fun, it's funny, it's lively, and it's live!
The Motleys read aloud, discuss and enjoy Shakespeare's plays in good
company. We may supplement our readings with screenings of filmed
productions, when available and time permitting. Who: Mature high
school students on up. Visit http://www.wildgoosecreative.com/Wild_Goose_Creative_|_Shakespeare_Group.html
