Community Update

>>>Natural Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<

Friday, November 27, 2009

I hope your Thanksgiving Day was warm with family and friends, good food, conversation, and maybe with wood stove or open fire nearby.  If not, this might be a goal worth working toward as we enter the season of holiday events and gatherings.  For example...

Simply Living is having their second annual Holiday Potluck at the Global Gallery Coffee House in Clintonville on Sunday, Dec. 13 from 5 -9 p.m.  All are welcome to bring friends and come to this festive celebration.  Bring finger foods, desserts, a happy voice for singing and an appetite for good food and conversation.  To sweeten the evening the delightful and talented Molly Winters will bring her guitar and share some holiday tunes beginning at 5 p.m.  Location: 3535 N. High St. 43214.

How do we create an ongoing sense of community in an urban setting?  Simply Living's Intentional Community Group has been doing it for the past 15 or more years!  Newcomers are always welcome to join the circle of conversation to explore community and personal development and living simply.  The group meets biweekly on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. Enjoy a vegetarian potluck at 6:30 and the gathering continues until about 9 pm.  In December the hosts will be Jim & Jacinda Baker, 172 E. Maynard Avenue, 43202,  Information about the Intentional Community Group: Jacinda Baker <jacindaincolumbus@gmail.com> or call 614.397.3945. For background visit simplyliving.org/community.

A key to creating community in both personal and community settings is the ability to LISTEN (sorry to 'shout' but some of us, me included, need to heed the call to learn this lesson. :-)  Lucky for us, we have a wonderful resource in our community to learn and practice this skill... & there is still time to participate in the upcoming workshop and healing circle next weekend.  See the calendar for details on these events led by Jeff Brown, a gem who has earned an international reputation for his NVC work.

Fri-Sat Dec 4-5  The Power of Deep Listening: A Compassionate Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Training Experience  Fri 6:30-9:30pm; Sat 9:30am-5:30pm

Friday: "Introduction to Compassionate Nonviolent Communication (NVC)" is for all learning levels, including beginners. Saturday: "Deep Listening Through Empathy" is for people who attend Friday evening, or those with prior NVC training experience. Location: Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 N. High St., Worthington, OH 43085. Contact CCCO at 614-558-1141 or info@nvcohio.org for information about these events or visit http://www.nvcohio.org/opportunities-to-learn-nvc/

Sun. Dec. 6  Community Empathy and Healing Circle Sponsored by Compassionate NVC Ohio  1 - 5:30 p.m.
Not a training session, but a real-life experience of an Empathy Circle. If you are interested in participating email Jeff Brown or call 614-558-1141.

Making Music together is another way to create community.  The Folkside Coffee House this Saturday at the Areopagitica bookstore, 3535 N. High St., will feature an Open Stage Extravaganza!  Opens at 7 pm for jamming followed by the Open Stage at 8 pm. Enjoy!

Cool Reads at the Simply Living Bookstore!
        Hot new titles
at the Bookstore:  Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto by Stewart Brand, co-author of the Whole Earth Catalog.  The book is making waves in the environmental community with his inclusion of nuclear power and "ecosystem engineering" as useful strategies that need to be explored.  The New Village Green: Living Light, Living Local, Living Large by Stephen Morris gathers wisdom and insights from a compelling array of thought leaders along side practical, downhome themes.  Topics range from spirituality to solar panels and, just like a real village green, are juxtaposed with opinions from "the new village people," including: Writers Bill McKibben and Michael Pollan; Scientists James Lovelock and Donella Meadows; Spiritual leaders Gandhi and Buddha... and sections that address good reasons to embrace alternative currencies and even tips for growing great garlic!
Anticancer: A New Way of Life (Hardcover) by David Servan-Schreiber will be available soon.  After undergoing chemotherapy and surgery for brain cancer, Servan-Schreiber, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, asked his oncologist if any lifestyle changes would prevent a relapse; the answer was no. Certain this was wrong, Servan-Schreiber spent months researching a mass of scientific data on natural defenses against cancer. The result is this book that comes highly recommended for anyone facing cancer or the risk of cancer - and that's about everyone!

Posters! As you browse the books, notice a fresh array of beautiful poster art created by volunteer Jenny Floch to promote Simply Living and related events that support the transition to a resilient, sustainable community in central Ohio.

Sun. Nov. 29  Sitting with God Meditation Circle at Global Gallery in Clintonville  6 - 8 p.m.
Meet on Sundays to do "meditation yoga."  Yoga means "union with God".  And in our meditation yoga  we "unite" with God and "contemplate" this experience. It is quite blissful and satisfying. If meditation were not "blissful" we just wouldn't do it. Pretty much, we have a party experiencing this bliss. Meditations are generally guided and last for 20 - 35 minutes and then we have wonderful discussions of what just happened! People have wild experiences just sitting on their rumps and it's a joy and learning experience to sometimes share them. It's easy to get a meditation buzz on in private, but we pick a public place to do our meditations because when you get your "meditation buzz on" you'll already be in public and you can more readily maintain it.  Led by Frank Tennyson <frank.tennyson@gmail.com> or call 487-1111.  Location: Global Gallery, 3535 N. High St. 43214.

We share what we know as we read through the plays, and we all stumble over the anachronisms and colloquialisms of Elizabethan speech. It's fun, it's funny, it's lively, and it's live! Sat. Dec. 5  The Five Elements of the Traditional Chinese Medicine  10 a.m - 1 p.m.
The Five Element System originated from the human need to comprehend how we fit into the natural world. The early practitioners of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) strived to create a rational system of healing.  This system is still in use today after 3000 years of practical experience. In the West, we don’t seem to connect the importance of eating seasonally, exercise moderately and support our bodies according to the element/season that we are in at the time. This incongruency may create an imbalance in our bodies. Learning about the five elements may create a much needed balance and a deeper understanding of seasons, organ systems, emotions and herbs associated with each element. The workshop includes two individual 3 hour sessions, one on Nov. 7 and one on Dec. 5. The November class focused on the understanding of Lung/Fall/Air-Metal element in TCM(traditional Chinese medicine). The December class will focus on Kidney/Winter/Water element in TCM. The emphasis will be on the prevention, support and treatment as well. Classes will cover necessary herb prep and understanding the emotional components of the elements. Presented by Anya Syrkin, MS HM, CNS, Reiki Master.  Location: 3726 N. High St in Clintonville @ Aesthetic Studio. The fee is $ 50 per class. Contact Anya at 614 804-0614 or

The Motleys read aloud, discuss and enjoy Shakespeare's plays in good company. We may supplement our readings with screenings of filmed productions, when available and time permitting. Sat.

This e-newsletter and calendar of events is a free service.  Thanks to all who have joined the Co-op and Simply Living... please encourage your friends and family to join!  If your membership has lapsed, it's time to renew... and if you haven't made a commitment to either organization, please consider joining or making a donation to help us implement our mission in central Ohio.  Every dollar is an investment in our own local economy/community.

Peace and Agape,

Chuck Lynd <clynd@cavenet.org> Editor
