Community Update
>>>Natural Foods, Simple
Living, Good People, Building Community<<<
Friday, November 27, 2009
I
hope your Thanksgiving Day was warm with family and friends, good food,
conversation, and maybe with wood stove or open fire nearby. If
not,
this might be a goal worth working toward as we enter the season of
holiday events and gatherings. For example...
Simply Living is having their second annual Holiday Potluck at
the Global Gallery Coffee House
in Clintonville on Sunday, Dec. 13 from 5 -9 p.m. All are welcome
to
bring friends and come to this festive celebration. Bring finger
foods, desserts, a happy voice for singing and an appetite for good
food and conversation. To sweeten the evening the delightful and
talented Molly Winters will bring her guitar and share some
holiday tunes beginning at 5 p.m. Location: 3535 N. High St.
43214.
How do we create an ongoing sense of community in an urban setting? Simply Living's Intentional Community Group has been doing it for the past 15 or more years! Newcomers are always welcome to join the circle of conversation to explore community and personal development and living simply. The group meets biweekly on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. Enjoy a vegetarian potluck at 6:30 and the gathering continues until about 9 pm. In December the hosts will be Jim & Jacinda Baker, 172 E. Maynard Avenue, 43202, Information about the Intentional Community Group: Jacinda Baker <jacindaincolumbus@gmail.com> or call 614.397.3945. For background visit simplyliving.org/community.
A key to creating community in both personal and community settings is the ability to LISTEN (sorry to 'shout' but some of us, me included, need to heed the call to learn this lesson. :-) Lucky for us, we have a wonderful resource in our community to learn and practice this skill... & there is still time to participate in the upcoming workshop and healing circle next weekend. See the calendar for details on these events led by Jeff Brown, a gem who has earned an international reputation for his NVC work.

Cool
Reads
at the Simply Living Bookstore!
Hot new titles at the
Bookstore: Whole Earth
Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto by Stewart Brand,
co-author of the Whole Earth Catalog. The book is making waves in
the
environmental community with his inclusion of nuclear power and
"ecosystem engineering" as useful strategies that need to be
explored.
The New Village Green: Living Light, Living Local, Living Large by
Stephen Morris gathers wisdom and insights from a compelling
array of thought leaders along side practical, downhome themes.
Topics
range from spirituality to solar panels and, just like a real village
green, are juxtaposed with opinions from "the new village people,"
including: Writers Bill McKibben and Michael Pollan; Scientists James
Lovelock and Donella Meadows; Spiritual leaders Gandhi and Buddha...
and sections that address good reasons to embrace alternative
currencies and even tips for growing great garlic!
Anticancer: A New Way of
Life (Hardcover) by
David Servan-Schreiber will be available soon. After undergoing
chemotherapy and surgery for brain cancer, Servan-Schreiber, a clinical
professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine, asked his oncologist if any lifestyle changes would prevent a
relapse; the answer was no. Certain this was wrong, Servan-Schreiber
spent months researching a mass of scientific data on natural defenses
against cancer. The result is this book that comes highly recommended
for anyone facing cancer or the risk of cancer - and that's about
everyone!

NOTHING DAY
Celebrate a 24-hour boycott of
consumerism on the day after
Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year. As the planet
starts heating up, maybe it’s time to go cold turkey. Take the personal
challenge by locking up your debit card, your credit cards, your money
clip, and see what it feels like to opt out of consumer culture
completely, even if only for 24 hours. Like the millions of people who
have done this fast before you, you may be rewarded with a
life-changing epiphany. While you’re at it, what better
time to point out real alternatives to unbridled consumption—and the
climate uncertainty that it entails—to friends and
relatives? For more information visit www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd.

Sun. Nov. 29 Sitting
with God Meditation Circle at Global Gallery in Clintonville
6 - 8 p.m.
Meet on Sundays to do "meditation
yoga." Yoga means "union
with God". And in our meditation yoga we "unite" with God
and
"contemplate" this experience. It is quite blissful and satisfying. If
meditation were not "blissful" we just wouldn't do it. Pretty much, we
have a party experiencing this bliss. Meditations are generally guided
and last for 20 - 35 minutes and then we have wonderful discussions of
what just happened! People have wild experiences just sitting on their
rumps and it's a joy and learning experience to sometimes share them.
It's easy to get a meditation buzz on in private, but we pick a public
place to do our meditations because when you get your "meditation buzz
on" you'll already be in public and you can more readily maintain
it.

Sat. Dec. 5 The
Five
Elements
of the Traditional Chinese Medicine 10 a.m - 1 p.m.
The Five Element System
originated from the human need to
comprehend how we fit into the natural world. The early practitioners
of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) strived to create a rational
system of healing. This system is still in use today after 3000
years
of practical experience. In the West, we don’t seem to connect the
importance of eating seasonally, exercise moderately and support our
bodies according to the element/season that we are in at the time. This
incongruency may create an imbalance in our bodies. Learning about the
five elements may create a much needed balance and a deeper
understanding of seasons, organ systems, emotions and herbs associated
with each element. The workshop includes two individual 3 hour
sessions, one on Nov. 7 and one on Dec. 5. The November class focused
on the understanding of Lung/Fall/Air-Metal element in
TCM(traditional Chinese medicine). The December class will focus on
Kidney/Winter/Water element in TCM. The emphasis will be on the
prevention, support and treatment as well. Classes will cover necessary
herb prep and understanding the emotional components of the elements.

Reads
at the Simply Living Bookstore!
The result is this book that comes highly recommended
for anyone facing cancer or the risk of cancer - and that's about
everyone!

Fri. Nov. 27 BUY
NOTHING DAY
Celebrate a 24-hour boycott of
consumerism on the day after
Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year. As the planet
starts heating up, maybe it’s time to go cold turkey. Take the personal
challenge by locking up your debit card, your credit cards, your money
clip, and see what it feels like to opt out of consumer culture
completely, even if only for 24 hours. Like the millions of people who
have done this fast before you, you may be rewarded with a
life-changing epiphany. While you’re at it, what better
time to point out real alternatives to unbridled consumption—and the
climate uncertainty that it entails—to friends and
relatives? For more information visit www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd.

Sun. Nov. 29 Sitting
with God Meditation Circle at Global Gallery in Clintonville
6 - 8 p.m.
Meet on Sundays to do "meditation
yoga." Yoga means "union
with God". And in our meditation yoga we "unite" with God
and
"contemplate" this experience. It is quite blissful and satisfying. If
meditation were not "blissful" we just wouldn't do it. Pretty much, we
have a party experiencing this bliss. Meditations are generally guided
and last for 20 - 35 minutes and then we have wonderful discussions of
what just happened! People have wild experiences just sitting on their
rumps and it's a joy and learning experience to sometimes share them.
It's easy to get a meditation buzz on in private, but we pick a public
place to do our meditations because when you get your "meditation buzz
on" you'll already be in public and you can more readily maintain
it.

Sat. Dec. 5 The
Five
Elements
of the Traditional Chinese Medicine 10 a.m - 1 p.m.
The Five Element System
originated from the human need to
comprehend how we fit into the natural world. The early practitioners
of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) strived to create a rational
system of healing. This system is still in use today after 3000
years
of practical experience. In the West, we don’t seem to connect the
importance of eating seasonally, exercise moderately and support our
bodies according to the element/season that we are in at the time. This
incongruency may create an imbalance in our bodies. Learning about the
five elements may create a much needed balance and a deeper
understanding of seasons, organ systems, emotions and herbs associated
with each element. The workshop includes two individual 3 hour
sessions, one on Nov. 7 and one on Dec. 5. The November class focused
on the understanding of Lung/Fall/Air-Metal element in
TCM(traditional Chinese medicine). The December class will focus on
Kidney/Winter/Water element in TCM. The emphasis will be on the
prevention, support and treatment as well. Classes will cover necessary
herb prep and understanding the emotional components of the elements.
Presented by Anya Syrkin, MS HM, CNS, Reiki Master. Location:
