Comfest weekend arrives today!  Enjoy live music, entertainment, and great food. Festival hours are: 1 p.m. – 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Plan to take the bus, park and ride, or bike if possible.  Check out the schedule online - comfest.com & click on Performances - to plan ahead to see your favorite bands, drum circle, healing arts demonstration, etc. across 7 stages!  Or hey, just wander through the Goodale Park maze of nonprofit tables, craft vendors, and food offerings!  Enjoy the diversity in our community - people watching is fun, but take some time to meet new people, network, and learn about the progressive organizations and the good work they are doing to make Columbus the city we know it can be.  Comfest is a "party with a purpose" and far from being stuck in the 60's and 70's you will discover that the seeds we've been planting all these years are starting to bloom.  We've been keeping hope alive... Bush is history, change is in the air, and it's up to us to make Obama's Yes we can mantra a reality.  I hope to see you at the Simply Living/WCRS exhibit booth.

Website of the Week:  Thom Hartmann: www.thomhartmann.com

"Renaissance thinking about the issues of our day" is the Hartmann tagline. Thom Hartmann is now the leading progressive talk show host and the author of many books, including several we carry at the Simply Living bookstore at the Co-op.  Thom recently left Air America and now manages his own program and website, where you can subscribe for free and receive live webcasts and videos.  The site includes his daily blog and, for a fee, you can download his "Thomcasts" - monthly and yearly subscriptions are available.  It's a good way to keep up with whatever is happening because Thom's take is usually insightful and cuts to the chase with his "radical middle" philosophy.

"If you don't like what you're doing, you can always pick up your needle and move to another groove."
~ Timothy Leary

How to Store Your Garden Produce: The Key to Self-Sufficiency by Piers Warren

Car Sick: Solutions for Our Car-addicted Culture by Lynn Sloman. Car Sick is a passionate, well-argued case for moving away from a car-centred to a people-centred society. Tony Juniper of Friends of the Earth says "Cars cause environmental destruction, provoke stress and tear the heart out of communities. Car Sick provides a page-turning account of how we got into this mess and more importantly charts an attractive way out. If you've got a car, read this book. It will change your views, and could change your life."
The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience by Rob Hopkins and NOW
The Transition Timeline: For a Local, Resilient Future by Shaun Chamberlin
"Without a vision of what can be, there is no alternative to a future completely constrained by the past. The ideal future set forth herein is not a useless pipe-dream. There is not a single outcome described in The Transition Timeline that could not realistically be achieved IF we all do things beginning now that are entirely within our ability to do. So here it is: the map and timeline of how to save our world and ourselves. Whether we WILL take up these suggestions as scheduled is a question for the cynics and dreamers to debate. For us realists, the only relevant questions are, Where do we start?, and, Will you join us?" ~ Richard Heinberg, Senior fellow of the Post Carbon Institute, and author of eight books, including The Party’s Over and Peak Everything

Using many of Carson's own words, Kaiulani Lee embodies this extraordinary woman in a documentary-style film which depicts Carson in the final year of her life.  Struggling with cancer, Carson recounts with both humor and anger attacks by the chemical industry, the government and the press as she focuses her limited energy to get her message of the dangers of chemical pollution to Congress and the American people.  The 55-minute film is an intimate and poignant reflection of Carson's life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural world. Location: Drexel East Theater, 2254 E. Main St. in Bexley. Sponsored by the Central Ohio Sierra Club, Simply Living and the Free Press, the movie is free and open to the public, donations accepted.

Sun-Fri  Aug. 16-21  Living Rivers--Arteries of the Eastern Forest, A 5-Day Field Course at Nature Sanctuary

This course will further participants' appreciation of the Eastern forest by studying its lifeblood -- its rivers and streams, and the myriads of life forms that watersheds support. Experts in the fields of botany, mussels, crayfish, fish and salamanders will be leading this course - giving participants a global, cross-disciplinary foundation of knowledge. America's Eastern Forest shares many tree and mammal genera with closely-related forest centers located in Europe and Eastern Asia. However, our native forest has one major feature that, when compared to its sister forests, distinguishes it globally. Quite simply, America's Eastern temperate forest claims the highest aquatic life diversity in the temperate world. Conservation challenges now make waterways one of the most imperiled of the forest's components throughout the temperate world, so it behooves Eastern US citizens to gain knowledge quickly in this important realm. This course is suitable for any person interested in living systems, regardless of formal educational background and vocation. Limited to 16 participants.
