Community Update

>>>Natural Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<

Friday, May 29, 2009

Riverfest and Waterfire kick off this weekend and the Columbus Arts Festival the following weekend... we can look forward to  many more gatherings this summer including Comfest June 26-28.  If you prefer smaller, less crowded events you will find those as well, including next Monday June 1st at the Community Market.  The first Monday rewards all our co-op shoppers with an extra 5% discount but this time we've invited some vendors to setup out front and we're expecting local music to fill the air.  We need rain, it's true, but let's hope for sunshine Monday.  And hey, one of those vendors will be Natura Pet Foods - they claim to have the healthiest brand on the market and to convince you they offering a free bag of dog or cat food.  You can't get it Monday but if you check out the co-op website you will find instructions on how to request your free bag: www.communitymarket.org.  I ordered mine!

Living Rivers--Arteries of the Eastern Forest, A 5-Day Field Course Led by 5 Outstanding Field Biologists! Aug. 16-21

This course will further participants' appreciation of the Eastern forest by studying its lifeblood -- its rivers and streams, and the myriads of life forms that watersheds support. Experts in the fields of botany, mussels, crayfish, fish and salamanders will be leading this course - giving participants a global, cross-disciplinary foundation of knowledge. America's Eastern Forest shares many tree and mammal genera with closely-related forest centers located in Europe and Eastern Asia. However, our native forest has one major feature that, when compared to its sister forests, distinguishes it globally. Quite simply, America's Eastern temperate forest claims the highest aquatic life diversity in the temperate world. Conservation challenges now make waterways one of the most imperiled of the forest's components throughout the temperate world, so it behooves Eastern US citizens to gain knowledge quickly in this important realm. This course is suitable for any person interested in living systems, regardless of formal educational background and vocation. Limited to 16 participants. We successfully live without a car, and are close to two bus lines, with easy access to downtown, OSU, High St., banks, and the library."  If interested, please contact Heather at copalaa2003@yahoo.com.

Websites of the Week! Drexel.net and Studio35.com

Yes, our local, independent movie theaters need your support.  Being a Locavore doesn't end with eating delicious, local organic food from our co-op or veggie friendly restaurants, or buying from Farmers Markets.  When we feed our minds, think local entertainment venues.  You may have heard that our last remaining Drexel is in trouble.  Have you seen Earth on the big screen?  It's still playing.  Is Anyone There? has become a smash hit and held over another week.  You can really help by purchasing a Drexel Fan Card for $100 (go together as a group?) and get 12 Admissions, 3 Popcorns, & 6 Sodas...  And Studio 35 has a wonderful story to tell and you can experience it now on DVD - pick it up at the box office for $10.  This Sat. at 11:30 you can catch Idiocracy, a film on the fast track to cult movie status.  Did you know you can rent Studio 35 for fund raisers, even birthday parties?  Check out both websites, book mark them as favorites, and do your part to keep these venerable local institutions alive and thriving.

What I began by reading, I must finish by acting." ~ Henry David Thoreau

Cool Reads at the Simply Living Bookstore!
Check out the display of gardening books this month... Bug Busters: Poison-free Pest Controls for Your House and Garden by Bernice Lifton...  a useful resource for any organic garden, and if you want birds to help, try Birds in Your Backyard: A Bird Lover's Guide to Creating a Garden Sanctuary by Robert Dolezal.  Or how about A Blessing of Toads: A Gardener's Guide to Living with Nature by Sharon Lovejoy.  Other gems await the artful browser...
It's graduation time, so consider books and videos when you think about gifts... sure money is always good, but giving the grad something to think about, or better yet, a book that might change his or her life, can be just the right choice.  You can slip an envelope with the cash or check into the book!
For fun, buy yourself the popular book by Wes Nisker, The Big Bang, The Buddha, and the Baby Boom.  If you liked his Crazy Wisdom, you're likely to enjoy this romp through the 60s and 70s and the search for enlightement in those heady times.
Thanks to everyone who shops at the Co-op and takes time out to browse our bookstore!  Live and learn!

Mon. June 1,8,15  Yoga Philosophy in Action: Non-Violence, Truth and Non-Violent Communication (NVC) 5:45 to 7:15pm
The first two aspects of the yogic "10 Commandments" are Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth).  While most of us consider ourselves relatively non-violent and truthful, the practice of telling the truth in a deeply non-violent way can be revelatory.  Are we nice more often than we are true?  How do we learn to say "no" in a way that fosters connection to others AND to ourselves?  How do we handle a conversation we dread when we imagine the other person will not want to hear what we have to say?  How indeed do we deal with our own destructive and judgmental thoughts about ourselves?  Non-Violent Communication as taught by Marshall Rosenberg offers specific and powerful tools to explore these questions and more.  Marcia Miller has been trying to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth for years, but found that NVC offered her more useful skills than she found anywhere else.  These classes include a small amount of lecture and lots of practice with real life issues as a way to experience the benefits and blessings of NVC. Instructor: Marcia Miller. Cost: $45 for series. Preregistration is required as space is limited. Please call 614-291-4444 to register.
