It's International Conscientious Objectors Day... a good day to honor those who "took exception to the rulers" as Amy Goodman tells it.  I recently watched the video biography of Howard Zinn, narrated by Matt Damon.  I recommend it as an appropriate celebration of our peacemakers and the tradition of questioning authority that is often neglected in our history books.  Zinn is an historian as well as an activist who influenced the civil rights movement and the peace movement during the Vietnam and middle eastern wars. He is the author of The People's History of the United States.

The Wellness Forum Spring Health Conference kicks off tonight, along with the workshop on Deep Listening in Nature.  Kirtan chants and calls the power of the divine mother and the arrival of spring tonight, and this weekend Mamapalooza will feature a dozen or so talented moms who rock at the Global Gallery.  The Eco-Chic Craftacular will feature many local artisans at Whetstone Park and the Agora Festival at Junctionview Studios is out to prove that Columbus is the Indie Arts Capitol of the world.... 6000 people showed up at the last event sponsored by the Couchfire Collective... the Co-op will have a booth at the Agora Festival this year, selling cold drinks and tasty snacks.  More about Agora: http://www.agoracolumbus.com/2009/.

It's the final weekend for As You Like It so if you feel a yen for the bard you won't be disappointed at the performances at Areopagitica Bookstore's theater space in the back. The Humanist Forum at the UU Church will feature a talk by John Seeger on population issues and their impact on all major global threats, including climate change, energy wars, and poverty.

Odds & Ends

Anne and Jay Warmke of Blue Rock Station found these gems and passed them along in their latest e-newsletter.  There is a new design for plastic bottles that could make it easy to make walls or greenhouses with their interlocking design. If you love to build or imagine, check out the "Inhabitat" website:  http://www.inhabitat.com/2009/01/15/polli-bricks-by-miniwiz/.
Ever hear of guerilla gardening? The Warmke's say they " love the idea of just throwing out seeds like sunflowers in places where beautiful things don’t usually grow." This site gives some great examples of things like seed bombshttp://ecolocalizer.com/2008/12/23/seed-bombs-walk-by-guerrilla-gardening/.

Website of the Week! Think Recycle http://thinkrecycle.com/

Think Recycle is a cost free cell phone and print cartridge recycling fundraiser for schools and non-profit organizations.  It's  good for the environment because used cartridges and cell phones can take up to 1000 years to decompose.  Thinking green diverts these cartridges and cell phones from landfills and ensures that they are properly recycled. For every 24 qualifying products you collect, they will plant one tree for your organization with American Forests or Tree Canada.  Free collection materials and pre-paid shipping are provided.  Thanks to Barbara Williams for recommending this website.

Cool Reads at the Simply Living Bookstore!
Check out the display of gardening books this month... Bug Busters: Poison-free Pest Controls for Your House and Garden by Bernice Lifton...  a useful resource for any organic garden, and if you want birds to help, try Birds in Your Backyard: A Bird Lover's Guide to Creating a Garden Sanctuary by Robert Dolezal.  Or how about A Blessing of Toads: A Gardener's Guide to Living with Nature by Sharon Lovejoy.  Other gems await the artful browser...
It's graduation time, so consider books and videos when you think about gifts... sure money is always good, but giving the grad something to think about, or better yet, a book that might change his or her life, can be just the right choice.  You can slip an envelope with the cash or check into the book!
For fun, buy yourself the popular book by Wes Nisker, The Big Bang, The Buddha, and the Baby Boom.  If you liked his Crazy Wisdom, you're likely to enjoy this romp through the 60s and 70s and the search for enlightement in those heady times.
Thanks to everyone who shops at the Co-op and takes time out to browse our bookstore!  Live and learn!

Mon. June 1,8,15  Yoga Philosophy in Action: Non-Violence, Truth and Non-Violent Communication (NVC) 5:45 to 7:15pm
The first two aspects of the yogic "10 Commandments" are Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth).  While most of us consider ourselves relatively non-violent and truthful, the practice of telling the truth in a deeply non-violent way can be revelatory.  Are we nice more often than we are true?  How do we learn to say "no" in a way that fosters connection to others AND to ourselves?  How do we handle a conversation we dread when we imagine the other person will not want to hear what we have to say?  How indeed do we deal with our own destructive and judgmental thoughts about ourselves?  Non-Violent Communication as taught by Marshall Rosenberg offers specific and powerful tools to explore these questions and more.  Marcia Miller has been trying to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth for years, but found that NVC offered her more useful skills than she found anywhere else.  These classes include a small amount of lecture and lots of practice with real life issues as a way to experience the benefits and blessings of NVC. Instructor: Marcia Miller. Cost: $45 for series. Preregistration is required as space is limited. Please call 614-291-4444 to register.

Notable and Quotable

"I think the real test of psychedelics is what you do with them when you're not on them, what kind of culture you build, what kind of art, what kind of technologies... What's lacking in the Western mind is the sense of connectivity and relatedness to the rest of life, the atmosphere, the ecosystem, the past, our children's future. If we were feeling those things we would not be practicing culture as we are." ~ Terence McKenna, Tripping
