Two Spots Open at Blue Rock Station's Straw
Bale Workshop May 23-29
This week long
workshop is their only full-length straw bale workshop offered this
year (so, snooze you loose). The approach of this
workshop is quite different from many offered around the country (and
we know – a lot cheaper
– but we do that to make it accessible for the “rest of us”).
Most
straw bale workshops take the approach that you are a building
contractor and want to build a traditional home that simply
incorporates straw bales into its design. We take the
approach
that you might know how to hammer a nail (but not necessarily) but have
always dreamed of building a little cottage out in the woods some day
- made out of scrounged materials. During the workshop we will build
a small sleeping cabin (12' x 12') with a tire foundation and a living
roof. To register, visit our website at
http://www.bluerockstation.com.
And oh yeah, there are still a few
spots open for Blue Rock Station's first ever Green Weekend May 16-17.
For only a fraction of the cost of staying one night at a hotel – you
can spend the weekend at Blue Rock Station, enjoying the quiet peaceful
surroundings, working on projects, or just talking. Find out
more at http://www.bluerockstation.com

Public
Art Project Embraces Community: Mural Dedication, Block Party at Summit
UMC Sat.
May 23 / 11:30 to PM Fun
A group of first-year students
from the Graham School have been working on a public art
project embracing the theme of “Community”
that will be hung on the wall of Summit on 16th UMC, on the corner of
16th and Waldeck in the University Area. To celebrate, there will be a
mural dedication and block party to support the students, and
equally importantly, to gather the neighborhood for community and
networking.
This event is hosted by Summit on 16th, the University Area Enrichment
Association, and the Graham School’s Experiential Program. College
student will lead the church service at 10:30 a.m., followed by the
mural dedication at 11:30, and then free food, music, and a festive
community afternoon begining at 12 noon. This is the very
street corner on which the original ComFest was held, and we’re
trying to capture that spirit again: Community engagement,
collaboration, free food, free music, and an amazing time. Location:
Summit at 16th UMC, 82 E. 16th Ave., 43201. More info, email:

Yoga
Philosophy in Action: Non-Violence, Truth and Non-Violent Communication
(NVC) Mon. June 1,8,15 from 5:45 to 7:15pm
The first two aspects of the
yogic "10 Commandments" are Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth).
While most of us consider ourselves relatively non-violent and
truthful, the practice of telling the truth in a deeply non-violent
way can be revelatory.
Are we nice more often than we are true? How do we learn to say
"no"
in a way that fosters connection to others AND to ourselves? How
do we handle a conversation we dread when we imagine the other person
will not want to hear what we have to say? How indeed do we
deal with our own destructive and judgmental thoughts about
ourselves? Non-Violent Communication as taught by Marshall
Rosenberg offers specific and powerful tools to explore these
questions and more. Marcia Miller
has been trying to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the
truth for years, but found that NVC offered her more useful skills than
she found anywhere else. These classes include a small amount
of lecture and lots of practice with real life issues as a way to
experience the benefits and blessings of NVC. Instructor: Marcia
Miller. Cost: $45 for series. Preregistration is required
as space is limited. Please call 614-291-4444 to register.

McClanahan Exhibit Opens at Jung Haus Gallery through June 27

5 p.m. Reception
You probably know Lynda from
her music with husband
Joel Knepp, her frequent talks on her spititual journey,
her involvement with Kriya Yoga, her tight connection to the Goddess...
and now we discover Lynda McClanahan is a self-taught artist
producing original oil paintings! Her influences include
Persian miniatures, medieval manuscript illustrations, and homemade
commercial signs seen on travels in India. Her subject matter
is
the holiness of ordinary life, especially the disregarded
portions of ourselves which frighten and challenge but also provide the
passion necessary for experiencing life at depth.
Acknowledging and
loving Mother Nature through this particular body, this
particular mind and in this particular place is a major theme of her
work. Columbus landmarks often appear in her paintings. She
also
commonly includes a character called "Red Woman," who symbolizes
vital energy, evolutionary longing, Holy Life. Lynda will be
showing her latest work at the Jung Haus Gallery, 59 West Third Avenue,
Columbus OH 43201. Come be enchanted with this exhibit, titled
OHIO
RED WOMAN: VISIONS OF A HOLY WORLD. More info on Linda, see

Sat-Sun
May 16-17 Eco-Chic
Craftacular at Whetstone Community Center Sat 1 - 7pm; Sun
12 -
5pm
Eco-Chic Craftacular
is a
first time show organized by
the members of Etsy Team Columbus,
a group of local artists, crafters and designers who sell handmade
items on Etsy.com. ETC created the idea for Eco-Chic Craftacular in
order to celebrate and encourage handmade, eco-friendly artwork,
clothing, crafts, purses and totes, jewelry, accessories and more.
Please join us at this community festival for a weekend of earth-lovin'
fun! Location: Whetstone Community Center, 3923 North High St.
in Clintonville 43214. T50-60 artists booths
are
anticipated
along with some food vendors and nonprofit information booths.
This is an exciting opportunity
for local artisans who create handmade
items that are unique, fun, original, cute, macabre, edgy, vintage,
re-purposed and/or “up-cycled.”
The goal is to attract vendors who will challenge themselves to bring a
more “green” concept to some of their wares. Not all items have

May 17 Public Art Project Embraces Community: Mural
Dedication, Block Party at Summit UMC 10:30 to PM Fun

1,8,15 Yoga Philosophy in Action: Non-Violence, Truth and
Non-Violent Communication (NVC) 5:45 to 7:15pm
