Community Update
>>>Natural
Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<
Friday,May 1, 2009
Gardeners are learning
to save water by installing rain barrels... it's one of those
things that seems like common sense now and we wonder why we
haven't always used them. You can buy them now at the Co-op
for about $60 and if you need help installing it, contact Chris
Luers
at littlesquarefarm.com or give him a call at 784-8505. I did and
can
recommend him for doing a really nice (and esthetically pleasing)
job.
You may have seen the little tent
at the Co-op with a first round of starter plants to grow
your own veggies, herbs, and flowers. Look for a really
BIG, brand new tent that will keep you browsing (and dry) while
shopping outside through the season. Thanks to GM Gabe
Sturgess and the staff for making our store a little gem in the
neighborhood.
Attention Raw
Food people... mark your calendars for a one-day conference on June
7 at the Unity Church
on Maize Rd. Called Consciously Alive! this Raw Foods day will
feature
seminar talks, demos, and a delicious vegan meal to end the day.
It's
happening on Sunday 6/7 from 1:30 - 7:30 p.m. The Co-op and
Simply
Living are sponsors and we'll have a table there. Check the
Calendar
for more details.
Here's a cool
event you will be glad you perked up and ventured out on a
Monday evening to experience... this coming Monday, May 4, Robert
Weschler, artistic director and choreographer of the dance company
Palindrome (from Germany) will be at the Wild Goose
Creative studio on Summit near Hudson. Palindrome uses bio-sensors
and motion tracking technology to control the music, lighting, or video
projections via the dancer's movements. See the calendar for
details. Only $5, such a deal! Give a shout out to the
Fuse Factory for teaming up with the new Wild Goose group!
New WCRS Program "The People's Exchange" Begins Friday May
1st!
The People’s Exchange is Columbus’s
new forum for community progress. Once a month, Carlotta
Michelle and Marisa Benzle
talk with Columbus residents about what’s happening in Columbus, and
how we can make what’s happening better for everyone. The People’s
Exchange offers a way for folks in the city to dialogue about how
being active in the community is the best way to enjoy it and improve it.
We sit down with a small panel so that multiple perspectives are
voiced. If you want to join the exchange, or have an idea for a
topic, please email us at starshineandclay@wcrsfm.org. Or
listen Friday’s at 7:30 pm on WCRS LPFM, 98.3/102.1, and online at

Audra Phillips
<audralp@earthlink.net>, President of the Ohio Midwives
Alliance, is involved in a legislative initiative in Ohio to
license Certified Professional Midwives. The Alliance is hosting a rally
and lobby day at the statehouse to introduce our legislation by

OPPORTUNITY to show the Ohio Legislature just how many Ohio
citizens support midwives. The more people show up, the stronger
the message we send about the importance of midwives for Ohio families!
If YOU want midwifery in Ohio to be protected through licensure, YOU
MUST ATTEND THIS RALLY! If you can't stay for the entire event, the
most important time is from 10-11 a.m., when we will gather for
speakers. Kids’ activities and tours

13 from 7-9 am & 11am - 1pm
It's that time again! To better
understand pedestrian and bicycle traffic trends in the region,
and to address the lack of consistent data about these modes of travel,

traffic count program. As usual, we will be conducting two counts:
one in the morning (7-9am) and one at midday (11am-1pm).
You may volunteer to help with either or both counts. No special
skills are required for participation.
No experience? A one-hour
training session will be held on Monday May 11th

are available across Franklin County and we will try to match you to
the location of your convenience. Get details here: http://www.morpc.org/transportation/bicycle_pedestrian/project.asp

Reverend Dr. Kathy Dwyer Talk at UU Church: "A Post-Christian
America?" 7:30 p.m. (6:30 potluck)
The April 13 Newsweek cover
story, The Decline and Fall of Christian America, has stirred
much controversy about the role and influence of Christianity within
America. In the article the author, Jon Meacham, quotes
religion polls indicating that those in America who claim no
religious affiliation has risen since 1990 from 8 to 15 percent.
The rising number of religiously unaffiliated Americans are more apt to
call themselves "spiritual" rather than "religious."
Conservatives view this trend with alarm, but Dwyer will offer a
positive perspective. She is the pastor of St. John's Church,
United Church of Christ in downtown Columbus. Potluck meal is
optional starting
at 6:30 p.m. Bring something you can share with a half dozen other
people -- a salad, an entree, a desert, a everage, etc. You are invited
to join us for both or for either. Location: 1st
Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd 43214.

Lynda McClanahan Exhibit Opens at Jung Haus Gallery through June 27
3 - 5 p.m. Reception
You probably know Lynda from
her music with husband Joel Knepp, her frequent talks on her spititual
journey, her involvement with Kriya Yoga, her tight
connection to the Goddess... and now we discover Lynda
McClanahan is a self-taught artist producing original oil paintings!
Her influences include Persian miniatures, medieval manuscript
illustrations, and homemade commercial signs seen on travels in India.
Her subject matter is the holiness of ordinary life,
especially the disregarded portions of ourselves which frighten and
challenge but also provide the passion necessary for experiencing life
at depth. Acknowledging and loving Mother Nature
through
this particular body, this particular mind and in this particular place
is a major theme of her work. Columbus landmarks often appear in
her
paintings. She also commonly includes a character called "Red
Woman," who symbolizes vital energy, evolutionary longing, Holy Life.
Lynda will be showing her latest work at the Jung Haus Gallery, 59 West
Third Avenue, Columbus OH 43201. Come be enchanted with this
exhibit,
titled OHIO RED WOMAN: VISIONS OF A HOLY WORLD. More info on

Sat-Sun May 16-17 Eco-Chic
Craftacular at Whetstone Community Center Sat 1-am - 7pm; Sun
12 -
5pm
Eco-Chic Craftacular
is a
first time show organized by
the members of Etsy Team Columbus,
a group of local artists, crafters and designers who sell handmade
items on Etsy.com. ETC created the idea for Eco-Chic Craftacular in
order to celebrate and encourage handmade, eco-friendly artwork,
clothing, crafts, purses and totes, jewelry, accessories and more.
Please join us at this community festival for a weekend of earth-lovin'
fun! Location: Whetstone Community Center, 3923 North High St.
in Clintonville 43214. T50-60 artists booths
are
anticipated
along with some food vendors and nonprofit information booths.
This is an exciting opportunity
for local artisans who create handmade
items that are unique, fun, original, cute, macabre, edgy, vintage,
re-purposed and/or “up-cycled.”
The goal is to attract vendors who will challenge themselves to bring a
more “green” concept to some of their wares. Not all items have
to be
green, but you’ll need to offer something on the greener side, in
addition to your usual wares to be considered for the show. Visit

"Free
love? As
if love is anything but free! Man has bought brains, but all the
millions in the world have failed to buy love. Man has subdued
