Community Update

>>>Natural Foods, Simple Living, Good People, Building Community<<<

Friday,May 1, 2009

Gardeners are learning to save water by installing rain barrels... it's one of those things that seems like common sense now and we wonder why we haven't always used them.  You can buy them now at the Co-op for about $60 and if you need help installing it, contact Chris Luers at littlesquarefarm.com or give him a call at 784-8505.  I did and can recommend him for doing a really nice (and esthetically pleasing) job.
You may have seen the little tent at the Co-op with a first round of starter plants to grow your own veggies, herbs, and flowers.  Look for a really BIG, brand new tent that will keep you browsing (and dry) while shopping outside through the season.  Thanks to GM Gabe Sturgess and the staff for making our store a little gem in the neighborhood.

Attention Raw Food people... mark your calendars for a one-day conference on June 7 at the Unity Church on Maize Rd.  Called Consciously Alive! this Raw Foods day will feature seminar talks, demos, and a delicious vegan meal to end the day.  It's happening on Sunday 6/7 from 1:30 - 7:30 p.m.  The Co-op and Simply Living are sponsors and we'll have a table there.  Check the Calendar for more details.

Here's a cool event you will be glad you perked up and ventured out on a Monday evening to experience... this coming Monday, May 4, Robert Weschler, artistic director and choreographer of the dance company Palindrome (from Germany) will be at the Wild Goose Creative studio on Summit near Hudson.  Palindrome uses bio-sensors and motion tracking technology to control the music, lighting, or video projections via the dancer's movements.  See the calendar for details.  Only $5, such a deal!  Give a shout out to the Fuse Factory for teaming up with the new Wild Goose group!

New WCRS Program "The People's Exchange" Begins Friday May 1st!

The People’s Exchange offers a way for folks in the city to dialogue about how being active in the community is the best way to enjoy it and improve it. We sit down with a small panel so that multiple perspectives are voiced. If you want to join the exchange, or have an idea for a topic, please email us at starshineandclay@wcrsfm.org. Or listen Friday’s at 7:30 pm on WCRS LPFM, 98.3/102.1, and online at http://wcrsfm.org.

Rally and Lobby to Support Ohio Legislation to License Professional Midwives Tues. May 5  from  9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Audra Phillips <audralp@earthlink.net>, President of the Ohio Midwives Alliance, is involved in a legislative initiative in Ohio to license Certified Professional Midwives. The Alliance is hosting a rally and lobby day at the statehouse to introduce our legislation by fall. This is a grassroots effort to educate and gain the support of legislators and the administration. This event is a CRITICAL OPPORTUNITY to show the Ohio Legislature just how many Ohio citizens support midwives. The more people show up, the stronger the message we send about the importance of midwives for Ohio families! If YOU want midwifery in Ohio to be protected through licensure, YOU MUST ATTEND THIS RALLY! If you can't stay for the entire event, the most important time is from 10-11 a.m., when we will gather for speakers. Kids’ activities and tours of the statehouse from 11am-2pm make this a family-friendly, fun event, so bring your children, neighbors, friends, and everyone who supports midwifery in Ohio! Join the Ohio Midwives Alliance and Ohio Families for Safe Birth as we celebrate International Midwives Day 2009 in Ohio! For more info, check ohiomidwives.org or safebirthohio.org.  Link to Directions: http://www.ohiochannel.org/your_state/ohio_statehouse/information/contac...

Volunteers needed for MORPC Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic Count  Weds. May 13 from 7-9 am & 11am - 1pm
It's that time again! To better understand pedestrian and bicycle traffic trends in the region, and to address the lack of consistent data about these modes of travel, MORPC has partnered with the Institute of Transportation Engineers in conducting ongoing ped-bike traffic counts in the region. With the help of volunteers like you, we are continuing our participation in the pedestrian and bicycle traffic count program. As usual, we will be conducting two counts: one in the morning (7-9am) and one at midday (11am-1pm). You may volunteer to help with either or both counts. No special skills are required for participation.
No experience? A one-hour training session will be held on Monday May 11th at 4 pm at MORPC. You will receive count forms, be given instructions and can choose the location(s) you prefer to count.  Count locations are available across Franklin County and we will try to match you to the location of your convenience. Get details here: http://www.morpc.org/transportation/bicycle_pedestrian/project.asp  More info, email Juana <jsandoval@morpc.org> or call 614-233-4140.

Website of the Week!  HomeMarking: http://homemarking.com

Hey, check this out.  I love this site and use it with my browser. Do you like to go to many websites for useful information, but you can't always remember to visit every website?  HomeMark allows you to view one of your favorite web sites every time you open your browser or click the home button. Each time you open your browser or click the home button another one of your favorite websites will be displayed. You can enter up to 20 URL addresses and I use it to make sure I keep up, at least occasionally, on my favorite internet haunts - local, news, alternative, etc.  If you love variety, take ten minutes to set it up.  It's free.
[It was developed by Lincoln Manning, a Columbus OSU grad now living in California and traveling back and forth to Tanzania with his wife and son.

Fri. May 1  Reverend Dr. Kathy Dwyer Talk at UU Church: "A Post-Christian America?"  7:30 p.m. (6:30 potluck)
The April 13 Newsweek cover story, The Decline and Fall of Christian America, has stirred much controversy about the role and influence of Christianity within America.  In the article the author, Jon Meacham, quotes religion polls indicating that those in America who claim no religious affiliation has risen since 1990 from 8 to 15 percent.  The rising number of religiously unaffiliated Americans are more apt to call themselves "spiritual" rather than "religious."  Conservatives view this trend with alarm, but Dwyer will offer a positive perspective.  She is the pastor of St. John's Church, United Church of Christ in downtown Columbus. Potluck meal is optional starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring something you can share with a half dozen other people -- a salad, an entree, a desert, a everage, etc. You are invited to join us for both or for either.  Location: 1st Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd 43214.
