Fresh from the Farm produce
buying program is back for a
second year! In partnership with
Shade River Farm, we are once
again bringing you and your
family 100% certified organic,
locally grown, fresh picked crates
of mixed seasonal produce for
purchase by weight at the Market.
The program should be in full
swing by the end of the month.
"Our Fresh from the Farm customer
buying program delivers to you
convenience and quality as we
promise to get fresh picked, organic
produce into your kitchen and on
to your family's table this summer,"
says CCM General Manager Edward
Bain.
Last year's debut was a big success,
and by the end of the growing
season we had about 20 regular
customers taking advantage of the
program. We hope to top that
number this year and expose more
of our patrons to the benefits of
supporting local organic growers
and their community marketplace.
Our friends Mike and Star Hamilton, owners of Shade River Farm, thank you for your
support last year, and hope to bring us more variety this year. The Hamilton's operate
263 acres in southern Athens County, and this is their 20
th
year in business. Mike says
it all started when they purchased their first 30 acres over 20 years ago, fixed up the
land and planted a big garden. When they produced more than they could eat, they
started selling the excess. Since then they have purchased more land and the farm has
grown into a full-time operation.
Shade River Farm has been certified organic since 1989, but Mike says they have always
observed organic practices. In addition to offering their local, organic produce to CCM,
the Hamilton's also sell their produce to a number of restaurants in Athens, the Athens
Farmers' Market, and other grocery stores around Ohio. He says he likes staying home
to work because he is his own boss.
