(manager's report continued from page 3)
We are supported by two more subsets of small and individual
growers for selective seasonal products as listed: Ranchero
Deluxe in California fresh dates, Charlie's Apples in Johnstown
Ohio apples, Herban Farmer in Columbus Ohio Basil plus,
Miracle Farms in Columbus Ohio berries, Three Creeks Farms in
Galloway Ohio assorted produce, and Toad Hill Farm in
Delaware Ohio assorted produce.
If the list were to continue, we would have twenty more listings
of small growers producing one or more of a variety of items from
Gail's Kitchen grown hot chili peppers to Mrs. Brian Loritch's
chem.-free winter squash.
I think as I have found in life whenever I look closely, it is never
as simple as it appears on the surface. We are serviced by well
over twenty five vendors who deliver orders ranging from 40
cases worth over $1500 to a small paper bag valued at $3.50.Some
may deliver regularly two times a week all year long some may
deliver periodically during the local growing season. If I were to
guesstimate volume of product grown and consumed locally
versus volume of product grown and distributed from a distance
of five hundred or more miles, I would say that ninety nine
percent of all produce we consume comes from a greater distance
than five hundred miles from our city and one percent is grown
locally and consumed locally that is within 500 miles. And that's
the way it is I would deduce for every grocery store in this city
that is a revealing and interesting thing I would say.
We like to sell produce. We take pride in our work and we enjoy
bringing to you the products you choose and enjoy. We are
proud also, however small the results, to support those in our
area who still work the earth and bring to us the fruits of their
labor. Hats off to our produce director Jeff Dudek and his
assistants Jordan Wagner and Kevin Murphy for making our
market great.

I don't want to get to the end of my
life and find that I lived just the
length of it. I want to have lived the
width of it as well.
