The Communicator - March 2005
Did you know that when the RMS Titanic set sail for New York in 1912 it
carried over 500 cases of Bass Ale aboard the ship, that remain on the floor
of the Atlantic to this day? Did you know that Samuel Smith's Old Brewery is
Yorkshire, England's oldest brewery, established in 1758, and still draws its
water from a well sunk over 200 years ago? Did you know that Newcastle
Brown Ale is Europe's best-selling bottled beer?
These tasty English ales come to us today through rich history and tradi-
tion. If you like any of the many styles British brews have to offer, then
Clintonville Community Market is the place to be. Not only are we stocking
some of the most popular English ales, we have also started carrying some
specialty beverages that are sure to make your mouth water.
Let's start with some of the more well-known English brews. CCM stocks 6-
packs of Newcastle Brown Ale for $6.99, and Bass Ale for $7.49. We carry a
full line of Samuel Smith's Old Brewery pints, including the Organic Ale and
Lager, Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout and seasonal selections, which is Winter
Welcome at the moment. Prices range from $3.29 to $3.49 per pint.
Brewed since 1827, Old Peculiar is another popular English ale, and sells for
$9.29 per 6-pack.
Bottle conditioned Hen's Tooth Ale is considered to be one of England's
finest traditional ales and boasts 6.5 percent alcohol by volume. You will
notice the sediment in the base of the bottle, which is active yeast that reacts with sugars in the beer and carries on
fermentation through the beer's life. CCM stocks these pints for only $3.29.
Old Speckled Hen pale ale owes its distinctive character and dry taste to a unique strain of yeast first used in 1896.
Its name was later taken from a speckled vintage MC car. CCM stocks this English classic for $7.99 per 6-pack.
New to the Market, as well as one of my absolute new favorites, is the St. Peters Organic English Ale. These pints are
truly spectacular.
Water is extracted from a borehole deep in the ground and combined with Soil Association
accredited light malted barley from Norfolk, England.
The
Soil Association is the UK's leading campaigning and
certification organization for organic food and farming.
Organic Hallertau hops from New Zealand provide the
distinctive palate, and St. Peter's own single strand variety
yeast is used. The result is a delicate, clean, crisp, lightly
carbonated, traditional English ale with a full bodied citrus
hop aftertaste. This lovely beer won the top prize in the
Soil Association's annual awards in 2002. For $3.59 a
pint, it's a steal! If you like porters, we are also carrying St.
Peters Old Style Porter for $3.49 a pint. Look for St. Peters
distinctive flask-style smoky green glass bottles. You can
visit them on the web at www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk.
Ales aside, CCM is also carrying two types of English mead.
Mead is probably the oldest alcoholic beverage known to
man. It is made in the natural and traditional way by
fermenting honey and water, then undergoing a maturation process in oak barrels.
