On Friday March 18
th
, local residents will
get a rare chance to photographically
travel to three indigenous co-ops
south of the border in Chiapas,
Mexico where CCM Grocery Direc-
tor Sean Luse has just returned
from, as part of a Fair Trade coffee
tour.
"I want to show people what human
realities lie behind the Fair Trade
label," Sean says.
Clintonville Resource Center, located
at 14 W. Lakeview, will host the 6:30
pm slideshow and wine tasting event,
featuring Natural State wines, CCM
natural and organic deli trays and baked goods, and of course, organic Fair
Trade coffee. The event is free, and donations will be accepted for the use of
the Resource Center. All ages are welcome, so we hope to see you there!
Sean's trip was organized by the Equal Exchange co-op, a company founded
in 1986 to create a new approach to trade, one that includes informed
consumers, honest and fair trade relationships and cooperative principles.
As a worker-owned cooperative, Equal Exchange has accomplished this by
offering consumers fairly traded gourmet coffee and tea direct from small-
scale farmer co-ops located within 10 countries.
In the context of agricultural commodities, "fair trade" is a voluntary program
practiced by some importers and food companies to create an alternative market
for traditionally disadvantaged producers in developing countries, usually small-
scale farmers. Sean saw first hand how these small-scale farmers in
Chiapas benefit from the Fair Trade model, and
more specifically, how their co-ops
have the same concerns as we do,
namely a commitment to
sustainability and protecting the
environment.
Sean's photos will take us to the
historical city of San Cristobal de
Las Casas, the capital of Chiapas
seated high in the mountains of
the Mexican southeast.
