's notes
I had a magical moment
today.
I got lost in what I was
doing- completely. Previous
to that I had many
thoughts rushing through
my head... life, the Uni-
verse, and everything. I
couldn't get any peace of
mind. Then I started
drawing and I became oblivious to the world and all of my
worldly concerns.
Do you have a hobby like that? Something that you can sink
into, become enveloped in, get consumed with? I truly hope for
you that there is something in your life that will swallow you
whole this way and consume along with it your worries and
cares. There is no better state of mind. There is no better way to
exist.
I feel fortunate today- fortunate for having something that I can
fall into.
There is a book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi entitled Flow that
speaks of this very phenomenon. It is "an experience that is at
once demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly
Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates is one of the most enjoyable and
valuable e xperiences a person can have." This book explains
what it means to experience this unique sensation of being
almost at one with that upon which you are concentrating. I
recommend it (the book and also the experience of getting into
the :flow: of things).
I would also like to take this opportunity to recommend The
Quick and the Dead, by Norman Mailer. It is a damn good book.
Of course, as much as I hate war and murder and treachery, I love
a good book about past wars. So, be advised, this is a WWII
story in graphic detail. Still- a good read, and I find that getting
into a good book is also a type of "flow" as I was writing about
before. It is a good space. Here's to it...
